I was just looking at the results of the Stack Overflow Survey of 2023, I was particularly interested in the Tools and technologies used by Data Analysts such as SQL, Python, R, Julia, etc.
Here are my top picks
SQL
SQL remains one of the most popular programming languages. According to this survey, SQL is the 3rd most popular programming language.
It is used by a staggering 51.52% of professional developers. Only Javascript and HTML/CSS are more popular than SQL.
This is great news for data analysts who are already familiar with SQL and those who want to learn SQL.
It simply means that there are a lot of opportunities out there for SQL developers because many companies are using this tool.
When it comes to salaries, SQL developers get a median salary of $74,963 per year according to the same survey.
PYTHON
I was also interested to see how Python would perform this year. Python is used by many data analysts for data cleaning, analysis, automation, and visualization.
According to the survey, Python is the 4th most popular programming language. It is used by 45.32% of professional developers.
Python developers get a median salary of $78,331 per year. If you are a Data Analyst or you are interested in Data Analysis, Python is the best language to pick up.
Not only is it easy to learn, it is also on demand and well compensated.
R
R is another great programming language popularly employed by Data Analysts for data mining, analysis, automation, and visualization.
R is used by 3.17% of professional developers and it is a great asset to learn for many data analysts. I have written a detailed comparison of Python vs R.
R developers get a median salary of $74,963 per year.
JULIA
I am a big-time fan of Julia because it is very fast and easy to use. Julia is actually one of the fastest programming languages out there.
It is one of the few programming languages in which peta-flops computations have been achieved.
Although Julia is not as popular as Python and R, it is a great tool for Data analysis, visualization, machine learning, and scientific computing.
Julia is used by 0.78% of professional developers and Julia developers get a median salary of $74,963.
VBA
VBA is very popular among Excel users, it is used to make custom functions, automate processes, and more. If you want to be an advanced Excel user, you must learn VBA.
VBA is used by 2.9% of professional developers and VBA developers get a median salary of $65,698 per year.
