I recently built a SaaS called Speeqa.
When I showed it to my friend, he asked me,
“Who is this SaaS for? Who is your target audience?”
Everyone who wants to improve their speaking and presentation skills, I replied.
“Hmmmmm,” he murmured.
Then I knew I had messed up. My target audience was way too broad. I then realized why I was having difficulties sending targeted DMs: I was struggling to find the right person to send them to.
So for the next 4 hours, I sat down and pivoted my SaaS to target Sales Professionals, making it easier to market because I know exactly who I am marketing to.
After this pivot, I shared on my socials (LinkedIn and Twitter/X) and I got 2 users, they are not paying users yet, but it’s a great start. It’s validation that I did the right thing.
This simple pivot and realization made my SaaS 10x easier to target and sell to the right audience.
It’s a common trap when making an app to target everyone. But if you target everyone, you end up targeting no one.
So the next time you are building an app/SaaS, ask yourself, Who is my target audience?
It should never be everyone.
