There is so much you can do if you beat procrastination. You will be able to study, read that book, hit the gym, build your side project, improve your habits, and more.
But procrastination almost always stands in the way to delay your goals and habits development. Here is how you can stop procrastinating using the 2 Minutes Rule.
I read about the 2 Minutes Rule in James Clear’s top-selling book Atomic Habits.
The 2 Minute Rule states that: “When you start a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do.”
“When you start a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do.”
You may be wondering, what habit/goal/exercise would take 2 minutes?
Well, the idea is that a new habit should not feel like a challenge, the actions that follow can be challenging, but the first 2 minutes should be easy.
The idea is to make your habit as easy as possible to start. Its almost always easy to continue what you are doing than to start doing something different.
If you want to read a book, start by reading for just 2 minutes.
If you want to exercise, try doing it for just 2 minutes.
If you are having difficulties studying, try doing it for just 2 minutes.
If you want to be a writer, write for just 2 minutes a day.
…………….
Most of the times you will end up doing more than 2 minutes. The key is to get started, once you start, it becomes hard to stop.
You may be wondering, “if the goal is to do more than 2 minutes, why trick myself that I will do it for 2 minutes,” I mean you can’t really trick yourself, can you?
Well, the most powerful thing about the 2 minutes rule is that it works even when you know that you are trying to trick yourself.
If you are still in doubt, here is the challenge for you.
Try to exercise for just 2 minutes and then stop.
Try to read for exactly 2 minutes and then stop.
Try to work on your side project for just 2 minutes and then stop.
…………..
It won’t be long before you are going beyond 2 minutes.
“It is better to do less than you hoped than to do nothing at all.”
So, whenever you find yourself struggling to do something that takes a lot of time but is beneficial to your growth, think about the 2 minutes rule.
